The Old Fashioned had disappeared into relative oblivion when Mad Men first aired in 2007. Don Draper's yen for this amber-coloured drink has been described as more prominent than some of the popular series' supporting characters. A humble concoction of just four ingredients, this classic cocktail appeared alongside the first-ever printed use of the world "cocktail" back in 1806. This old-school drink is cool, it's classic and we suspect will always be in style.

Makes 1 drink

• ½ tsp sugar

• 3 dashes Angostura bitters

• 1 tsp water

• 2 oz bourbon

• Garnish with orange peel

• Add sugar, bitters and water into a double old fashioned glass, stir until sugar is nearly dissolved.

• Fill the glass with a large ice cube, add the bourbon, and gently stir to combine.

• Express the oil of an orange peel over the glass, then drop in.
