The Benefiits of Raw Honey
Make a Bee-Line for It
It seems too good to be true, but raw honey is a natural wonder. In its unpasteurized state - unheated, unprocessed and naturally organic - raw, pure honey maintains its minerals, vitamins, enzymes and powerful antioxidants. So unlike refined sugar, its exact combination of fructose and glucose help regulate the body's blood sugar levels and stabilize blood pressure. Not to be outdone, raw honey's anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties also make it an excellent cough medicine. Even sweeter? When it's local, it also contains a blend of local pollen which can strengthen a person's immune system and reduce pollen allergy symptoms. We partnered with Ivyridge Honey Farm in Prince Edward County, where owner Bryan Cooper has passionately nurtured a nutrient rich environment for bees on land with an abundant diversity of limestone, wild flowers and native deciduous trees. This lively, complex honey has has a medley of notes and is gathered in fields that border Lake Ontario.
Why It's Fashionable to Buy Local
Apart from the health benefits of buying local raw honey, doing so can also play a small but meaningful part in slowing down the declining honey bee population. A cornerstone of the environment, bees are critical to our food supply and yet scientists from around the globe are trying to understand why our honey bee population has been reduced by 1/2 in the last 50 years. To help support the local honey industry (and reducing our environmental footprint) you can also plant bee-friendly flowers and eliminate the use of pesticides to treat your lawn or garden.
