Meet the Designer: Scott Yetman

HG Design

Scott Yetman

Meet the Designer

We asked Scott Yetman what fuels his work. The designer - whose firm Scott Yetman Design provides classic interiors from modern to traditional design, loves blending styles while never, as he elegantly puts it, "losing a sense of today". From period homes and luxury residences to executive offices and suites, Yetman and his team work with clients in Montreal, the Eastern Townships, Canada's east coast and Palm Beach. A passionate supporter of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and other charities, Yetman is influenced by people, places and things. Together, they enable him to create fresh, of-the-moment spaces, something the designer feels he was always meant to do. As he puts it, "I really think that my profession chose me."

HG: Your style?

SY:  I define my style as “classical modernism.“  I use many references to classical architecture and design while blending or highlighting them with modern architecture. Basically I’m a regency sideboard with a modern art installation above it.

HG: When did you first become interested in design?

SY:  I can’t remember when I wasn’t interested in design, especially houses. I've always been fascinated by every aspects of design, from architectural details to fabrics and furnishings. I think that my profession chose me because I'm completely content when I'm designing something.

HG: Who or what inspires you?

SY:  So many things! Classical architecture, True Modern Architecture and artists like Agnes Martin and John Singer Sargent. I'm very drawn to Joseph Dirand and his bold approach to design, and I'm endlessly inspired by travel, which sadly is hard to come by these days!

HG: What's your favourite part of the design process?

SY:  I really love all aspects of the design process but especially enjoy being on site with the whole team from tradespeople to clients. It's akin to being part of the creation of something.

HG: Where's your happy place?

SY:  I'm so happy at FoxHill, our home in the Eastern Townships that I share with my husband and our dog Vixen. I'm also always so happy when in Greece, the birthplace of most things Classical; everything from the light, the people and the food to exploring the Acropolis has a magical feeling for me. Lastly, Palm Beach - it's a perfect island and we're fortunate to have a little place there.

HG: Styling tip?

SY:  I keep it fresh! There's nothing like fresh flowers, the latest books, and carefully chosen (emphasis on carefully) scented candles to bring your space to life.

HG: Favourite room in the house?

SY:  I love to cook, so the kitchen is number one for me. I also love our entertaining spaces, because we love having guests over and serving great cocktails and dinner.

HG: Favourite entertaining tip?

SY:  Relax ! If you're not enjoying yourself, how can your guests? Preparation is key, so that you can truly enjoy your company. And, in addition to great food and drink, the right music, lighting, flowers and scents elevate any event.
