Meet the Designer: Gillian Green

HG Designs

Gillian Green

We asked Gillian Green what fuels her work. The Toronto architect, whose boutique firm specializes in a highly personal approach to architecture and design, takes a unique approach to each project, viewing them as organic journeys. Material choices, composition, use of space and light remain constant obsessions, and together with high caliber contractors and craftspeople, Green is able to realize spaces for her clients, filtering the intent of each project through an artful sensibility, with surprising and delightful results.

HG: When did you first become interested in design?

GG: I was the kid who was always drawing and making things. I lived in a household where creativity was nurtured and encouraged. My creative instinct and natural inclination towards mathematics and science drew me towards studying architecture, landscape and design.

HG: Who or what inspires you?

GG: I'm inspired by art and travel. During university, we had the opportunity to study for a semester in Paris and I visited many examples of contemporary architecture. Experiencing projects designed by Le Corbusier, in particular, left a profound impact on me. Over thirty years later, lessons learned on light, material and awe continue to inspire and fuel my creative drive.

HG: Where is your happy place?

GG: Nothing restores my batteries more than spending time with loved ones at the cottage. Our island cabin north of the city allows us to be surrounded by the natural world and has a front row seat to sunsets!

HG: What's your favourite part of the design process?

GG: I enjoy many parts of the process, but I value my relationship with my clients most. There is great satisfaction when the project is built, and the clients can fully experience and appreciate the spaces. The curved stair’s effect on the space of this house was difficult to convey on paper, but now that it's been built, the clients can experience the joy of living with its sculptural beauty.

HG: Styling tip?

GG: I love designing built-in storage into a project. Not only does it add texture and structure to a home, but the combinations of open and closed storage hide away and or organize the mess of everyday life. They also convey a calming quality and can also be used for pops of colour and personal style by displaying the client’s beautiful wares.

HG: Favourite room in the house?

GG: The home’s heart or gathering spot is my favourite room. Often it's found in the kitchen and more specifically, at the island. The heart allows for my clients' personalities to be showcased through the choice of materials and lighting. It's also a place to have some fun with colour.

HG: Best entertaining tip?

GG: When it comes to entertaining, I find joy in setting a spectacular table. I put time and consideration into everything that goes on a table from the flowers to the accessories. Hopson Grace is an incredible resource for the obsessive entertainer—so much beauty to choose from!

Gillian' Picks

"I believe Hopson Grace has the most sexy pepper grinder I have ever seen. The delicately carved wood piece would be a standout addition to anyone’s kitchen or dining table!"

"I have had a long obsession with chairs, not only as functional objects but also the sculptural nature of them. I am coveting the Bok chair from Ethinicraft for my own home—it has an evocative form which is so lovely. If my family had not imposed a moratorium on the adoption of any new chairs, I would bring one home!"
